Neighborhoods 'Parade'

The April, 1975 issue of CL News announces the first annual 'Parade of Neighborhoods.' In response to a 1973 CL report titled, "Building Confidence in Older Neighborhoods," the 'Parade' consisted of:

  • A tour of participating neighborhoods
  • A point of contact in each neighborhood where visitors could stop and learn more about the neighborhood
  • Special events in each neighborhood including ethnic fairs, walking open-house tours, and displays of neighborhood history

Organizers were looking to demonstrate the attractiveness of older neighborhoods in Minneapolis and St. Paul, and hoping to balance-off the enormous publicity given to new-home developments.

In the April, 1965 issue of CL News, lobbyist Peter Popovich recommends the following hints for good lobbyists:

Be helpful to legislators. A lobbyist must be willing to do those things which legislators themselves never would have time to do, such as drafting bills and amendments.

Never get mad at legislators. You may be on the opposite side of a legislator on one issue, but later you and that legislator probably will be working together.

Always be truthful. Never intentionally mislead a legislator. It may not be in your best interests to tell all the truth, but the legislator will respect you for it.

Always remember your friends. It is a good policy to write to legislators after the session and thank them for their work and cooperation.

Advice to work by.
