"The Right Thing": A Civic Icon Turns 80
What an honor to attend Gov. Quie's 80th Birthday Party last night! There's a lot I could talk about (hearing Chuck Colson, meeting Bill Frenzel, singing "Amazing Grace" with over 1000 people at an event like this), but the highlight for me was Mr. Quie's speech. After mentioning expected topics (family, friends, faith), he ended forcefully on two themes.
* The achievement and graduation gap in education: "How can we tolerate this. The worst crime we are committing in Minnesota right now is to neglect these students!"
* Public policy: "We are all a part of making public policy. If the facts are given to you as a citizen, wisdom comes forth."
I'm going to see if we can get a transcript posted here. Where else but Minnesota would a conservative evangelical Christian Republican site his greatest achievement as indexing the income tax!
