The Power of "Common Space" -- on Race
A special thanks to everyone who contributed to such an amazing converation last night on race and public policy: the featured speaker, Councilmember Samuels; our co-sponsor the Metropolitan Alliance of Community Centers; the event sponsor, US Bancorp; and the host, the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center.
An additional thanks to the 40 people who attended and took part, far exceeding our expectations (and our food).
We promise to continue this conversation, and this work together as partners!

Attention All College Graduates!
From Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, the commencement address we all need to hear now, and should have heard years ago when we graduated.
It is also an interesting follow-up to my own recent "Viewpoint" column in the May Minnesota Journal.

Mind-Openers/Mind-Blowers Announced for May and June
Another Mind-Blower
Race and Public Policy: Finding Common Ground in an Uncommon Conversation
with Don Samuels
Minneapolis City Councilmember, Ward 3
The inability to have honest public conversations about race and public policy priorities means that we often can’t impact these very priorities. We avoid the issue of race, and then inadvertently avoid the issues impacted by race. This conversation will be an opportunity to talk about race in such a way that citizens become the solution-makers and beneficiaries as race intersects with public policy. The conversation will mix presentation from Councilmember Samuels, with audience interaction and discussion.
Wednesday, May 26 at 5:30 p.m.

Higher Education Project in the News
Two great editorial pieces from yesterday's Star Tribune.
1) Editorial on the need to pay attention to higher education. Do we need a "Cinderella story" for this "step child"?
2) Q & A with Co-Chairs Rondi Erickson and Vance Opperman.

A Forum on Civility in Politics
The Minnesota Compact presents
A Forum on Civility in Politics
Thursday, May 13th, from 2:30 to 4:00 p.m.
The Humphrey Forum, Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs
Featuring:
Vicki Gowler, editor of the Pioneer Press
Anders Gyllenhaal, editor of the Star Tribune
Mitch Pearlstein, President, Center of the American Experiment
Tim Penny, Senior Fellow at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs
The inspiration for this forum comes from a symposium published in the winter issue of the American Experiment Quarterly entitled, “They Beat the Hell Out of Each Other Up There”: Civility in Minnesota (and National) Politics. As we conclude the 2004 legislative session and move into the campaign season, what better time than now to continue the discussion about the state of political civility in Minnesota.
The afternoon forum will also provide an opportunity to talk about the Minnesota Compact, a project that has played a role in Minnesota politics in the past and which is being renewed in the current election cycle. The Minnesota Compact, which originated in 1996 and continued in 1998 and 2000 under the leadership of the League of Women Voters of Minnesota, is well known for its efforts to raise the level of political discussion in four areas: candidate debates, campaign advertising, media coverage and citizen participation.
One of the strengths of past Minnesota Compact efforts has been the coalition of organizations and individuals working together to improve elections in Minnesota. Many of these partners are again meeting to discuss plans for the 2004 Minnesota Compact including, Minnesota E-Democracy, the Minnesota Broadcasters Association, the Citizens League of Minnesota, the Minnesota Newspaper Association, the Minnesota News Council, the Humphrey Institute’s Center for the Study of Politics, and others.

Citizens League "50 Facts" Election Project
The Citizens League is considering an exciting project with the Pioneer Press and TPT Public Television to convene a study committee to indentify the five or six most important public issues for this fall's campaign, and then the 10 most important facts for each issue.
The Citizens League would coordinate the citizen-based study committee process. The intent, and the great opportunity, is to determine what a broad range of citizens can agree on as the most important facts for each of these key issues.
This process will help frame issues for the general public, and provide context for citizens to use when deciding what policy solutions -- and what candidates -- they support.
The final details of the project are still being finalized. Interested candidates can click on the "contact us" button to let us know!
