How I Spent My Labor Day Vacation

I'm taking a vacation, of sorts, by spending the week with my mother-not-in-law ("Miss Bette Ruth"), who is visiting from Shawnee, OK. It's a blast. Grace is in grandma-heaven, and her long skinny feet have hardly hit the ground. (As Tim and I are now saying, "Grace who?".)Bette and Grace.2006.smaller.JPG

We spent last weekend with my family in Omaha. The highlight for me was visiting Strategic Air Command, where Tim was stationed in the mid-late 80s. As vets, he and his mother have access to the base. The site is awesome, if for no other reason than it's former role and power during the Cold War. (It's also where President Bush went on 9/11.) It's probably the largest fortified bunker between Maryland and the Rockies.

I have to admit how funny it was shopping at the "BX". Who knew 20 years ago that the Cold War would be over, or that Tim would be back on base buying diapers, baby clothes, and a DVD of Brokeback Mountain with his (male) partner, his mother-not-in-law, and his two kids. I felt like a rebel, of sorts, and completely in a foreign land. They had no idea. The people were incredibly friendly, if for no other reason than they didn't know if Tim was an officer or not.

It was also shockingly easy to get on base. Tim's mother just showed her Air Force ID and our entire minivan just drove through the gates. Not sure what I think about that.

After two days of work, it's off to Duluth and back "home". More car miles than you can imagine.
